Former Rangeland, Planned Streets

Pueblo West homeowners call concrete contractors for driveways, RV and trailer pads, shop slabs and patios. The community spreads across 49.7 square miles, roughly 7 miles west of Pueblo along U.S. 50, and had 33,086 residents and 12,533 housing units in the 2020 census. Wikipedia notes that about 23 percent of residents live in areas the census counts as rural and that the community is mostly bordered by ranch land and conservation easements, so jobs range from a standard driveway on a residential street to slabs on more rural parcels.

How Pueblo West came to be

Robert P. McCulloch's company began developing Pueblo West on former rangeland, and the metropolitan district that runs water, wastewater, fire and parks was formed on September 16, 1969. Growth was slow at first, with about 2,000 new residents by 1974 and nearly 4,500 by the early 1980s, then a boom in the 1990s. So the housing stock covers several decades. Concrete from the early years is now more than 40 years old, while other driveways were poured in the last few years.

Pueblo West is a census-designated place, not a city, and two bodies share the job of a city hall. The metropolitan district handles water, wastewater, fire protection, parks, public works and covenant enforcement. Pueblo County handles planning and zoning, and since January 1, 2026 its Building Division also handles building permits here. That split matters for concrete: an RV pad, a widened driveway or a new shop slab can raise covenant questions with the district as well as permit questions with the county, so we check both before we form anything.

Wind, sun and a dry climate

Pueblo West gets close to 300 days of sunshine a year. Summer highs usually sit in the 80s and 90s and can top 100, and spring is noticeably windy. Sun and wind together pull moisture from a fresh slab quickly. On open lots we:

  • Pour early in the day and avoid the windiest afternoons.
  • Use evaporation retarder or keep the surface damp while finishing.
  • Cure with a membrane compound or wet curing for several days.

That keeps the surface strong and reduces the fine surface crazing that shows up on slabs that dried too fast.

Winter west of the city

Average snowfall in Pueblo West runs about 31 inches a year, and winter lows are usually in the 20s. Driveways here see snow, melt during the sunny day, then refreeze at night. Air-entrained concrete is the standard defense; the tiny air bubbles give freezing water room to expand. We also recommend skipping deicing salts for the first winter and sealing the surface once the slab has cured.

Projects that fit Pueblo West lots

RV pads and shop slabs. A heavy motorhome or a loaded trailer needs a thicker slab, usually 5 to 6 inches, with rebar and a well-compacted base. We size the pad to the vehicle and plan the approach so it ties into the driveway without a lip.

Long driveways. Where a house sits well back from the road, the driveway can be a big pour. Pouring it in sections with planned joints controls cracking, and a broom finish gives traction on a sloped approach.

Patios and outdoor living. Lake Pueblo State Park sits along the community's southern boundary, and with close to 300 sunny days a year a back patio gets steady use. Stamped patios with a sealer stand up to sun and are easy to sweep after a windy day.

Repairs. Older slabs that have settled or cracked can often be sealed or partly replaced rather than torn out completely. We will tell you which approach makes sense.

Drainage on open ground

The Colorado Geological Survey notes that clay soils on Colorado's plains can swell when wet and that poor surface drainage makes damage worse. On a large lot, we slope driveways and pads to shed water away from the house and garage and keep downspouts from dumping onto the slab edge.

Pueblo West Questions

How thick should an RV pad be in Pueblo West?

For a motorhome or heavy trailer, we usually recommend 5 to 6 inches of concrete with rebar over a compacted base. The right thickness depends on the vehicle weight and the soil on your lot, which we check on site.

Who do I check with about concrete rules in Pueblo West?

Two places. The Pueblo West Metropolitan District enforces covenants, and Pueblo County handles zoning and, since January 1, 2026, building permits. We check both for your lot before work begins.

Can you pour concrete on a windy Pueblo West day?

Strong wind dries the surface too fast and causes cracking. We watch the forecast, start early, and use evaporation control and curing compound so the slab cures evenly.
