Pouring in the Foothills

Beulah Valley is a foothill community at 6,172 feet, and concrete contractors who work here plan around slope, cold and access more than anything else. The census-designated place covers about 2.6 square miles in Pueblo County and had 518 residents in 2020. Colorado State Highway 78 enters the valley from the east, and Bishop Castle lies between Beulah and San Isabel to the southwest.

A long history in a small valley

Beulah was settled in 1862 under the name Mace's Hole, after a bandit named Juan Maes. A post office opened under that name in 1873, and in 1876 a local preacher suggested Beulah, a name taken from Isaiah. Beulah Valley is unincorporated, so building questions here go to Pueblo County rather than a town hall.

Why altitude matters for concrete

At more than 6,000 feet, winter nights are colder and the snow sticks around longer than it does in Pueblo, about 1,500 feet lower. Concrete that is wet and then freezes over and over will scale and crack unless it is built for it. Our standards for Beulah jobs:

  • Air-entrained ready-mix for every exterior slab.
  • Minimum 4-inch walks and patios, thicker for driveways.
  • Broom finish on anything you walk or drive on in winter.
  • Pours scheduled in warm months, with blankets on hand for cold nights.

Building on a slope

Steep lots need more planning than flat ones. A driveway that climbs to a house has to drain without water racing down its center and freezing into a sheet of ice at the bottom. We grade drives with a slight cross-slope, add channel drains at the garage door when needed, and step walkways with concrete stairs where grades get steep. Retaining edges keep the base from washing out in heavy summer storms.

Getting concrete up the hill

Access is a real cost factor in a mountain valley. A full ready-mix truck is heavy, and some drives are narrow or soft. During the estimate we look at where the truck can safely park, whether a pump is needed, and how long the chute or hose run will be. Planning that ahead avoids surprises on pour day.

Steps that stay put

On foothill lots, concrete steps are often the only way to get from the driveway to the door. Steps need footings below the frost zone or a solid tie to the house, consistent riser heights, and treads deep enough for a boot. We form each step to the same rise so nobody trips, slope treads slightly so water drains off, and use a broom finish for grip. Where a slope is long, a landing partway up gives a place to rest and breaks the run into shorter flights.

Handrails can be anchored into the concrete during the pour or added later with sleeves we set in the forms.

Shade and snow

Where trees shade a drive or walk, snow stays on the concrete longer. Shaded walks and drives benefit from a good sealer and an early shovel so meltwater does not refreeze in place. Pine needles and leaves can also stain fresh concrete, so we keep the surface covered during curing.

Gravel drive or concrete?

Some Beulah owners keep gravel on long drives and add concrete only near the house. That puts concrete where it matters most for snow removal and mud.

Projects we take on in Beulah Valley

Driveways replacing gravel that washes out. Walkways and steps on sloped lots. Patios for summer evenings, plain or stamped. Slabs for garages, sheds and hot tubs. Repair of cracked or heaved concrete. Because Beulah Valley is unincorporated, we check with Pueblo County on permits for your project.

Beulah Valley Questions

Can a concrete truck reach my house in Beulah?

Often yes, but steep or narrow drives may need a pump. We check access during the estimate so the plan and price account for it.

How do you keep a sloped driveway from icing up?

We use a broom finish for grip, add a cross-slope so water drains to the side, and install a drain at the bottom if water collects. That keeps meltwater from freezing in one spot.

Which season suits concrete work in Beulah Valley?

Late spring through early fall, when nights stay above freezing. We can pour in cooler weather with blankets, but the season is shorter than in Pueblo.
