Concrete for Avondale Homes
Avondale is a small unincorporated community in Pueblo County, and it is part of the area we serve as concrete contractors. The census-designated place had 594 people in 2020 on about 0.63 square miles, while the 81022 ZIP code area that includes nearby homes had 1,624 residents. At 4,557 feet, it sits lower than the city of Pueblo.
Roots in the valley
The Avondale post office opened on March 22, 1892, and the name comes from Stratford-upon-Avon in England. Until 1953 the community had its own Avondale High School; that year students were zoned to Pueblo County High. Today the zoned schools are Avondale Elementary, Vineland Middle and Pueblo County High, all in Pueblo County School District 70.
Water first
Water sitting against a slab or soaking into the soil under it is the root cause of a lot of concrete trouble. The Colorado Geological Survey lists cracked and heaved driveways, patios and sidewalks as common signs of expansive clay and notes that poor surface drainage makes it worse.
On every Avondale estimate we look at:
- Where water comes from: roofs, irrigation, neighboring lots.
- Where it goes now and where it should go.
- Whether the new slab can be raised slightly or sloped to shed water.
What we pour
Driveways and parking areas for cars, trucks and trailers. Patios behind the house for shade and dining. Walkways from the drive to the door and to outbuildings. Slabs for shops, sheds, carports and equipment. Stamped concrete for a decorative entry or patio. Repair for cracked and settled concrete.
Bigger slabs on bigger lots
Outside city limits, projects often go beyond a driveway. Requests include parking pads for a boat or camper, a slab for a pole barn or metal building, and a wide apron in front of a shop door. Each one needs a different plan. A metal building slab may need thickened edges and anchor bolts set in the concrete at exact positions, so we coordinate with the building supplier's drawings. A boat or camper pad needs thickness and a firm base where the tongue jack and tires sit.
We also think about how trucks will reach the pour site. On a soft field after rain, a loaded ready-mix truck can sink, so timing and access are part of the plan.
Clean edges and backfill
After forms come off, the slab edges are exposed. We backfill with soil and slope it away from the concrete so water does not run along the edge and undercut it. Good backfill is a small step that makes a big difference.
Which office handles permits
Avondale's building questions go to Pueblo County. The Southern Colorado Building Department, which took over City of Pueblo permits on January 1, 2026, says on its site that the county took over building functions for unincorporated areas on that date and that it keeps no permit records for those areas. If you have paperwork from the old Pueblo Regional Building Department for work on your property, the county is now the place to ask about it.
Shop slabs and metal building pads are where those county permit questions come up most.
Built for the plains climate
The Pueblo area averages more than 70 days a year at 90 degrees or warmer and gets frequent freeze-thaw cycles each winter. Concrete in Avondale faces both. We use air-entrained mixes for winter durability, schedule summer pours early in the morning, and cure slabs properly so the surface stays hard. Control joints are cut the same day so cracks form where they belong. Because Avondale is unincorporated, we check with Pueblo County on any permit your project needs.

Avondale Questions
Water pools by my Avondale garage. Can new concrete fix it?
Often yes. We can replace the apron or driveway with proper slope away from the garage and add a drain if needed. We also look at downspouts and grading nearby.
Do you pour shop and equipment slabs in Avondale?
Yes. We size the thickness and reinforcement to the load and build a compacted gravel base so heavy equipment does not crack the slab.
Is a permit needed for concrete work in Avondale?
It depends on the project. Avondale is unincorporated, so we check with Pueblo County before work starts.
